Privacy Policy for Trailsift
Last updated: October 10, 2026
Itch Studio Ltd. (“us”, “we”, or “our”) makes the Trailsift app for Mac (the “App”). This page explains what the App reads, what leaves your Mac (almost nothing), and what we hold about you if you buy Trailsift Pro or contact us.
In short: Trailsift looks at where your Mac keeps traces of what you browse, download and view, and tells you about them. Everything it reads and everything it finds stays on your Mac. There is no account, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking of any kind. If you buy Pro, we hold your name, email address and the record of your purchase, and nothing else.
What the App Reads
To build its report, the App reads the places listed on What Trailsift checks: browser histories and caches, the macOS download log, thumbnail caches, recent-item lists, messaging attachment folders, activity databases and similar. It reads them on your Mac and nowhere else.
- It only reads. The audit never deletes, moves or changes anything. Databases are copied into a private temporary folder before they are read, so the originals are never opened, and that folder is removed when the audit ends.
- Counts, not contents. The audit report shows how many items there are, their size and their date range, not web addresses or file names.
- Word Search shows matching page titles, web addresses and file names on your screen, because that is what you asked it to find. They are not stored, sent or remembered after you close the App.
- Full Disk Access is optional. If you turn it on in System Settings, macOS lets the App read protected places such as Safari's history. You can turn it off at any time.
If you save or copy a report, it becomes an ordinary file or clipboard text under your control. We never receive it.
What Leaves Your Mac
The App makes no network connections of its own. Your licence key is checked on your Mac, without going online. Links such as “Read more” open in your web browser only when you click them, and the sites you visit that way have their own privacy policies.
One feature will connect to the internet when it arrives, and it is the only one that ever will: an update check, which asks our website whether a newer version exists. As with any web request, our server sees your IP address, the App's version and your macOS version. We don't use these to identify you, and we will update this policy before it ships, describing exactly what it sends.
Buying Trailsift Pro
Pro is sold through Link, Stripe's merchant of record service. Link and Stripe take your payment, work out the tax, and send your receipt, under Stripe's Privacy Policy and Link's. Your card details go to them and are never seen or stored by us.
From the purchase we receive your name, email address, country, the amount paid and the date. We use your email address to send your licence key, to send it again if you lose it, and to handle refunds and support. Your licence key contains your email address and the purchase reference, so that it can be checked on your Mac. We keep no separate database of buyers: the purchase record stays in our Stripe account for as long as UK company and tax law requires, normally six years. We never sell or share it, and we don't send marketing email.
The legal bases are the contract between us (supplying what you bought) and our legal obligations (keeping company and tax records).
Contacting Us
If you email us, we keep the email and our reply so we can help you, and delete them when they are no longer needed, normally within two years.
Children
The App is meant for the person who owns or looks after the Mac. It is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect anything from them.
Your Rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask for a copy of the personal data we hold about you, ask us to correct or delete it, or object to how we use it. Email us and we will reply within a month. Because the App sends us nothing, the only data we can hold is what is described under Buying Trailsift Pro and Contacting Us. If you are unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We will post the new version on this page and update the “Last updated” date above.
