Remove the location from photos before you share them

Most phones record where each photo was taken, often to within a few metres, inside the photo file. Send the file by email or AirDrop, or upload it somewhere that keeps the data, and the location goes with it: a garden, a school gate, an office.

Check a photo

Open it in Preview and choose Tools > Show Inspector. If there's a GPS tab, the photo records where it was taken, and the tab shows the place on a map.

Share without the location

From the Photos app

Click Share, then Options at the top of the sharing window, and turn off Location. When you export instead, choose File > Export and untick Location Information.

From Preview

In the Inspector's GPS tab, click Remove Location Info. This changes the file itself, so do it on a copy if you want to keep the original's location.

On iPhone

Tap Share, then Options at the top, and turn off Location before you send.

Find them all at once

Photos with a location build up in Downloads, Desktop and Documents: saved from messages, exported, or copied from a phone. TrailSift's free Photo Locations page lists every one there that records a place, with the date and where it was taken. TrailSift Pro makes copies without the location, ready to share, from the list or by dropping photos on the page, and leaves your originals exactly as they were.

The list is free. Copies without the location are part of Pro.
